The first women to compete at Pipeline had to undergo many challenges. They here brave and determined and achieved recognition and cemented their way into what’s known to be one of the best waves for Bodyboarding in the world.
Some of those names include Chris Ann Kim, Shawnee Oide, Andrea Ferreira, Alessandra Bove, Carol Philips among many others. They were the first and not least important in the history of women’s bodyboarding.
Before 1990 when the first women event took place the girls had to challenge themselves competing among the men. Leila Ali, Daniela Freitas, Stephanie Pettersen and Claudia Ferrari showed their talent challenging the men at Pipeline. Claudia Ferrari advanced once time to the main event and even received a trophy for its achievement.
Claudia Ferrari was the first women to win the GOB world tour in 1995. Claudia also has 22 consecutive Pipeline events, a remarkable record.
The division has come a long way. The first all women’s event at Pipeline was held in 1990. Since then we have been there every year with exception of 1998, 2004 and 2008 where there was no IBA sanctioning. In those early days Carol Phillips and Betty Depolito were instrumental in gaining permits, working closely with Bob Thomas and Allan Lennard to secure the events.
Now the IBA are staging a Grand Slam with the best girls from around the world all heading to Hawaii lead by the current World Champion Isabella Sousa.

Please take a look below and enjoy the ride. Women have achieved a lot since the beginning at Pipeline. We hope the future holds even more memorable moments.
